Café of Life Newsletter – March 2006By Dr. Allison Barriscale March is “Kids Month” at Café of Life.
This month we are excited to share the value of life
enhancing wellness chiropractic care and a wellness lifestyle for children.
The Café of Life’s vision extends beyond our planet’s current state
and looks to distant future generations. We
understand that our children really are our future.
By instilling healthy values and wellness practices into our younger
generations we help to create a stronger, healthier future for many generations
to come. The early years in a child’s development are
crucial for determining their future health and well-being. We know from research, that the early years are vitally
important times for the development of their nerve system, which coordinates and
controls every function in their body. Who
we are as adults is largely related to what happened to us and what we
experienced and observed when we were very young.
From before birth, until the age of five, a child’s
nerve system is growing and learning at an astonishing rate.
Neurological pathways are forming and building upon one another.
This process is most intensive and more easily influenced during the
early years of life, when our neurology is most flexible.
Dr. Bruce Lipton, a renowned cellular biologist,
describes a child’s developing nervous system as a tape recorder that is
constantly imprinting all of the information that is perceived directly into
their nerve system. Children act as
a neurological vacuum cleaner sucking in all that is happening around them. This
understanding can help explain many of the chronic patterns that we see running
through families such as abuse, alcoholism, and even depression.
With each experience a child has there is the
opportunity to appropriately integrate that experience and learn, grow and
develop optimally as a result. Alternatively,
an overwhelming physical, chemical or emotional stressor or experience will
cause tension, stress and adverse patterns to accumulate in their nerve systems,
which Chiropractor’s term subluxation. By
providing children with chiropractic care we can help them appropriately
processes their experiences as they are happening while allowing minimal tension
and subluxation to be stored in their bodies.
In this proactive approach we can prevent future
health and behavioral issues by minimizing the accumulation of stress and
tension in their nerve systems. This
allows for optimal health, function and performance in the present as well as in
adulthood. At the Café of Life we strive to
empower the children we serve with an understanding that their bodies are
innately intelligent. We help them
understand that their bodies are powerful, beautiful and healthy and that they
are too. When they are experiencing
symptoms such as a cough or a fever we remind them that they are strong and
their bodies can take care of them. Many
of them understand that symptoms are generally a sign that their body is
undergoing a healthy process to manage a stress to their system, such as a
virus. By instilling this trust in
their bodies, they learn that they are powerful and that their innate
intelligence is there to help them in every way. Children in our “Chiro Kids Club” love coming to
the Café of Life. Rarely is there
ever any fussing about lying on the table or on mom’s tummy. They seem to innately understand the value of chiropractic
care for themselves. When we look around today at our aging baby boomer
population, with an already overwhelmed healthcare system, we see that we need
to be open to a different perspective. The
reactive model of our health care system is putting a huge strain on our society
and if nothing changes it can only get worse.
We need to look beyond what is happening today and
think of future generations and what their fate may look like.
North American aboriginal people have it right, considering the effect of
what they are presently doing on seven generations into the future.
By instilling similar values into our youth and by thinking about the
future of our planet now, in every action we make, we can help create healthy
generations for many years to come. What’s Happening this month at the Café of Life
